Report: Insurers use IT to promote healthy lifestyles

Innovative health insurers increasingly are using technology to encourage members into leading healthier lifestyles, according to FierceHealthIT. A new report from Chilmark Research details how insurers have launched social media, games and mobile apps to compel consumers to participate in their health, wellness and disease-management programs.

"Numerous market forces are now pressing down upon payers, and payers are increasingly coming to the realization that they need to deploy member engagement solutions that work," says Chilmark analyst John Moore. "Payers are now going to where consumers already are seeking to engage their members via a variety of consumer-based technologies."

Among the insurers successfully using apps and social media is Humana, which started with games for children in 2008 and recently began offering two app games that promote wellness--one based on the video game Tetris and another that motivates users to walk around to play. --Read the full article from FierceHealthIT
