The latest report from the Department of Health and Human Services stated that nearly 11.7 million Americans enrolled in a plan through the state and federal insurance marketplaces during the open enrollment period that ended in February. All told, 86 percent of enrollees qualified for subsidized insurance--roughly 7.7 million from the 37 states using Healthcare.gov and more than 2.2 million using exchanges in 13 states and the District of Columbia. On Healthcare.gov, 53 percent of enrollees, or about 4.6 million, were new customers, while more than half of the 2.2 million "active re-enrollees" who selected plans on the marketplace instead of just automatically re-enrolling shopped for and bought a new plan.
