Number of uninsured Americans dropped by nearly 16 million since 2013

Nearly 16 million fewer people lack health insurance in the first quarter of 2015 compared to 2013, according to a new report from the federal government. In 2013, the number of uninsured Americans stood at 44.8 million, a number that declined to 29 million in early 2015, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Health Interview Survey finds. Put a different way, the uninsured rate was 14.4 percent in 2013, and in the years since the Affordable Care Act has taken effect, the rate dipped to 9.2 percent. A Gallup poll released Monday, meanwhile, shows the uninsured rate fell from 17.3 percent in 2013 to 11.7 percent in 2015. The two reports agree, however, on the fact that Medicaid expansion states experienced greater declines in the number of uninsured than states that did not expand the program. The percentage of adults younger than 65 who obtained private coverage through federal or state-based exchanges also increased, from 2.5 percent in the last three months of 2014 to 3.6 percent in the first three months of 2015, the CDC report notes.
