North Carolina to take managed-care approach to expanding Medicaid

Despite the fact that some have raised concerns about the effect of Medicaid expansion on states' budgets, more states are starting to consider expanding their programs. North Carolina is one of the newer states to plan an overhaul for its Medicaid program, and for some of the Republicans who control the Tar Heel State's legislature, the budget predictability that the overhaul would provide is highly appealing, Kaiser Health News reports.

North Carolina is one of 20 states that has not expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, despite struggles with huge cost overruns. Thus, proponents say the latest plan to revamp the system may be what the state needs to better manage its citizens' healthcare cost and quality demands. To design its Medicaid overhaul, North Carolina plans to use a mixture of models that would make hospitals, doctors and insurers all responsible for controlling costs by better managing patients' care, according to KHN. Article
