Florida House rejects Medicaid expansion
Florida's Republican-led House of Representatives rejected the state's plan to expand Medicaid to nearly 650,000 residents, reported the New York Times. The bill's Florida Health Insurance Affordability Exchange would have used more than $18 billion over 10 years in federal funding to expand the low-income pool for low-income residents. Opponents of the bill--which was passed by the state's Senate last week--claimed the plan was an example of federal overreach, too expensive and a direct offspring of the controversial Affordable Care Act. Opponents also said the plan was just another attempt to expand Medicaid, but under another name. Florida is one of 22 states that has rejected Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act.
