Blue Cross drops Medicare Part D coverage in Louisiana

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana will no longer offer stand-alone prescription drug coverage to its Medicare members, the company said in a letter to its members, reported The Times-Picayune. Medicare Part D coverage will discontinue next year and the state's largest insurer is urging its members to find a new plan. Blue Cross said it chose not to renew its contract with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services for Medicare Part D after considerable thought. "To allocate resources most effectively, the company made the strategic business decision to discontinue offering RxBLUE beginning in 2014," Blue Cross said. "This is not related to the Affordable Care Act." The decision affects about 13,000 seniors who participated in the Blue Cross BlueRx prescription plans, which the company has provided since 2006.
