3 WellPoint board members resign for personal reasons
WellPoint has lost three board members, who all cited personal reasons for leaving the second-largest insurer in the country.
In a filing announced Monday, WellPoint said the members of the board--Lenox Baker, Jr., Susan Bayh and Sheila Burke--offered their resignations, effective immediately. The insurer added that the board members' decisions didn't result from any disputes with the company, Fox Business reported.
"Each of the directors resigned for personal reasons and there were no disagreements or disputes between the company and any of the named directors which led to their resignation," WellPoint said.
The resignations come roughly six weeks after Joseph Swedish took over as WellPoint's CEO. Swedish, a former hospital official who never before managed a public company, most recently served as the president and CEO of Trinity Health, which operates 47 hospitals across the country.
Baker is a retired cardiac surgeon, Bayh is a lawyer and wife of former Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., and Burke is a lecturer at Harvard University and Georgetown University. All three of the members have served on the board since December 2004, reported Bloomberg.
Although WellPoint spokesperson Kristin Binns couldn't provide information about potential replacements for the members, she said the board "constantly evaluates qualified individuals who could bring a valuable and unique perspective to WellPoint," the Indianapolis Star reported.
