Bike giveaway contest promotes health benefits of physical activity in early childhood

CHICAGO, April 23, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) announced the winners of its "Like It to Bike It" sweepstakes. The online contest ran throughout the month of March and focused on promoting healthy lifestyles at an early age by giving away three 12'' youth bikes and safety helmets to randomly selected winners.

"As an insurer to 1 in 3 Americans, it is just as much our responsibility to provide Blue Cross and Blue Shield members with the proper tools and education to stay well as it is to provide them with quality healthcare coverage," said Scott P. Serota, BCBSA president and CEO.  "Bicycling offers significant social and physical benefits for adolescents and is a great way to incorporate physical fitness into a child's daily lifestyle to prevent the onset of preventable chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes. Increasing awareness about the benefits of daily exercise for children and their families can help foster happier and healthier communities."

During the sweepstakes, the BCBSA Facebook and Twitter pages educated followers on the physical and mental health benefits of biking and similar aerobic activities. Regular exercise is especially important for children as it can help them perform better in school and decrease their chances of being overweight as adults.

The three randomly selected "Like It to Bike It" winners are:

  1. Jodie Rosenblum from Lakeland, Florida
  2. Lacey Burd from Lapeer, Michigan
  3. Liz Walker from Reidsville, North Carolina

The "Like It to Bike It" sweepstakes was held on the BCBSA Facebook page from March 1 through April 1 and was open to United States residents 18 and older. For more information about BCBSA and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies please visit www.bcbs.com.
