Feds charge patients for complicity in ambulance fraud

Federal authorities in Philadelphia brought charges Thursday against four Medicare beneficiaries accused of accepting kickbacks for taking unnecessary ambulance trips and convincing others to do likewise, the Philadelphia Business Journal reported. The government says the passengers were ineligible for ambulance transport since they could walk and travel safely by other means. The beneficiaries' alleged involvement in the scheme is one aspect of an ongoing federal investigation of Brotherly Love Ambulance, Inc., whose operators stand accused of filing more than $4 million in false Medicare claims. This case may be part of a crime trend in Philadelphia since the government has charged eight ambulance providers there with fraud in the last four years. Article
