HHS to switch up enrollment timeframe, auto-enrollment method
The current open enrollment period will be the last one that starts in the fall and runs into the next year, as well as the last one to experience the current re-enrollment method, according to Healthcare Payer News. For next year and 2017, the enrollment period will run from October to December. This past year, if consumers who were auto-enrolled in plans experienced an increase in premiums as of Jan. 1, 2015, they were able to switch plans and had about a month to do so. Now, the Department of Health and Human Services is considering the concept of "alternative re-enrollment hierarchies." Under this new system, according to the article, consumers would be "offered a choice of re-enrollment hierarchies and could opt into being re-enrolled by default for the subsequent year into a low-cost plan rather than his or her current plan or the plan."
