Cigna CFO sees brighter future for individual marketplace

Though some health insurance giants have recently expressed skepticism about the sustainability of the Affordable Care Act marketplace, the Hartford Courant reports that a top Cigna executive has taken a more optimistic view. Cigna Chief Financial Officer Tom McCarthy said that Cigna expects to lose money on its ACA exchange products in 2016, but that "does not undermine the long-term attractiveness of the market." McCarthy added that he expects in the long run, the individual market will become more stable.

Cigna CEO David Cordani echoed those sentiments in an interview in December, saying the insurer did not expect to make money right away on the ACA exchanges. However, he said some aspects of the marketplace should be fixed to provide more flexibility for health plans. Article
